Admiral Sir Henry Morgan (ca. 1635 â€Ã¢€Å“ 25 August 1688) was a Welsh Admiral, a privateer,  wrongly deemed a pirate who gained fame and notioriety in the New World Caribbean, sailing under letters of marque from the Governor of Jamaica plundering Spanish settlements and ships. He was one of the most notorious and successful privateers of all time, and one of the most ruthless who worked in the Spanish Main. His success included many defeats of Spanish Fleets, captures of enemy forts, ports and towns, often against much larger forces, and the plunder of their citizens wealth. Pirate Booty indeed, and all legally authorized by then Jamaican Governor Modyford. Later in life, Morgan was appointed Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica, and then became acting Governor. King Charles II grew fearful of the Jamaican Council, which had grown more independent from the Crown, and appointed a new Governor Thomas Lynch, a political rival of Morgans. Lynch promptly suspended Morgan from his offices.

The stories of his piracy stem from a  an account of Morgan's disreputable exploits was published by Alexandre Exquemelin, who once had been his confidante, probably as a barber-surgeon, in a Dutch volume entitled De Americaensche Zee-Roovers (History of the Buccaneers of America). Morgan took steps to discredit the book and successfully brought a libel suit against the book's publishers William Crooke and Thomas Malthus, securing a retraction and damages of two hundred English pounds. The book nonetheless contributed much to Morgan's reputed fame as a bloodthirsty pirate during the time he was in Newport. After Lynchs death, Morgan was reinstated to the Jamaican Council and continued there until his death in 1688.
